| Description / विवरण | |
| Description / विवरण | The surround is in three separate parts cf. Cat. 299 and 300, Pl. CIV . It had been once reconstructed in the garden of the Museum, but has since been dismantled cf. Viennot, Les divinites fluviales, Pl. 44 a . At the base of the jambs are River Goddess gross. In this instance, Ganga is shown, in profile, knees bent, and carrying a pot in the raised left hand, the right hand being broken. Above hovers the damaged figure of a Naga, hands folded in adoration while below is the badly damaged makara and a dwarf attendant. To the Goddess right is a large standing female figure holding a lotus stalk which rises from the ground and curves over her and the attendant Nandisvara so as to form a double canopy. Next to him is the small figure of a bearded anchorite, hands folded in adoration. The right side of the frame is similar, Yamuna being substituted for Ganga cf. Cat. 300, Pl. CIV . Above these groups and separated from them by a horizontal band of stenciled patralata are the shafts of the jamb with a projecting central row of three niches with pediments on both sides and filled with conventional mithuna figures. They are topped in the architrave portion Cat. 299 by the images of Brahma and Siva on the left and right respectively. In the center is an image of Visnu on Garuda. The recesses in between are filled with seated Navagrahas beginning with Ravi and ending with superimposed images of Ketu and Rahu. Flanking the vertical rows of niches on the jambs are narrow offset bands with figures of musicians and dancers. The band nearer the opening changes into a row of flying Maladharadevas in the lintel portion while the farther band is replaced by a bakulamala. The outermost molding consists of superimposed vyalas with their heads alternately facing in opposite directions so that their bodies suggest the winding movement of a lotus creeper. The fillet nearest the doorway contains a stenciled patralata motif. |
