| Description / विवरण | |
| Description / विवरण | The feet and forearms of the image are missing. Only a small portion of the circular halo is visible behind the shoulders, the head has been reset, and the chin has been repaired. The Buddha stands in a gentle tribhanga with left knee bent. The right hand must have been raised in abhaya-mudra, and the left hand held one end of the transparent samghati which covers both shoulders forming a thin ridge of incised folds at the neckline. Fine curved lines indicate the puckered cloth over the broad and heavy shoulders. The waist is slim, the thighs swell gently and are smoothly modeled. The face is round and fleshy, the lower lip full and sensuous. The hair is arranged over the head and the usnisa in small curls, and the hairline dips slightly over the center of the brow. Traces of the original red ochre are visible on the left shoulder. The halo was plain in the center and bordered by a broad floral scroll between beaded margins. The sculpture is one of the finest products of the Sarnath school, combining a robust yet graceful strength with subdued elegance, and should be earlier than the group dedicated by the monk Abhayamitra of A.D. 474-477 reproduced by John Rosenfield, On the Dated Carvings at Sarnath, Artibus Asiae. XXVI, 1 1963 , pp. 10-26, Figs. 1-2. |
