| Description / विवरण | Panel showing Revanta as horse-rider out hunting, preceded and followed respectively by Danda and Pingala, also figured as riding horses and marching in the same direction. Two attendants of Revanta are shown in the background, one behind, holding a parasol and the other facing and approaching the god with a wine-jar in hand. Hunting hounds are represented beneath all the three horses mauling and, in two cases almost devouring the hunted animals which resemble deer. In two cases the hunted games are being trampled upon by the horses, that beneath the leading horse being a wild boar. An attendant behind the last horse-rider carries on his shoulders the complete carcass of a hunted stag. This is a most lively representation of the divine hunter Revanta, son of Surya, whose iconographic traits fully accord with the description given in the ancient Silpa texts including Varahamihira s Brnhatsamhita c. 6th century A.D. . This sculpture bears close affinity to a figure from Mathura Mathura Museum No. 68.2-4 . |
