| Description / विवरण | The image depicting four female figures, indeed, is very interesting and important from iconographical point of view. This represents a panel of Panchamatrika. Saptamatrika images are not common in Assam. Panchamatrica panels are extremely rare not in Assam but also in other parts of the Country. The present sculpture piece shows five female figures in asana attitude flanked by Ganesa and Kartikeya. The central figures may be identified as Vaisnabi, holding padma, gada, chakra and sankha. The identity of the other figures is not clear to us. The extreme right figure representing a member of the Matrikas may perhaps be identified as Lakshmi, as it is made to hold a ghata. The figure to the left of the figure of Vaisnavi may be of Parvati, as it is made to hold a child on her lap. The identities of the other two figures of the deities are not known. As not a single deity of this panel has her vehicle, it is sure that this is a panel representing Matrika goddess. The sculpture bears c. 10th centuries trait. |
