| Description / विवरण | Mentioned in the Rgvedic hymns Surya has been worshipped since ancient times.The cult of sun god is widespread in India.In this frgmentary sculpture surya is shown standing.The portion below knee is missing and both the hands and crown are damaged. He wears a karanda makuta and the austere halo behind the head is noteworthy.He is decorated with ornaments which include karnakundala and muktahara. A slender yanjopavita suspended from the left soulder runs across the right side abdomen.Similarly a long garland hangs down from the left shoulder and gently touches the right thigh.He is shown holding lotus flower in both the hands which reaches the level of his shoulders.The lower garment is held by a roundish katibandha and the long pleat is suspended cetrally. The dwarf relief of a female figure at the left bottom corner appears to be his consort usha and the object held by her is not discernible.On stylistic grounds image may be ascribed to Rashtrakuta period. |
