Description / विवरण | Depiction of mythical animals is an integral part of the sculptural art of India. These are found in the temples built during different periods across the country.In this relief a mythical lion having eagles beak is depicted in the centre of a medallion having two circles.The outer circle depicts lotus petals whereas inner circle is decorated with a row of beads within two circular offsets. The lion standing sideways is shown with opened mouth, has a fang protruding from the side of the jaw.It has protruded eye ball,short ear and on the head a short horn turning slightly backward is shown.Neck portion depicts two rows of short mane.It stands on three legs whereas front right leg with opened paw is lifted up.The tail is lifted up and terminates with a circle.Anatomical features depicted is typical of the early-chalukyan sculptors. |
