| Description / विवरण | This damaged sculpture depicts Mahavira, the twenty fourth Jaina tirthankara seated in paryankasana in the attitude of meditation on a pedastal with its back rest terminating with a makara head resting on a pilaster.Invariably most of the tirthankara images are identical and they are identified on the basis of cogniznace depicted. In this case relief of lion head at the centre of pedastal which is the lanchana of Mahavira, flanked by standing lions on either side within a frame is depicted.Head and right portion of shoulder and hand is missing. Here in the extant portion of sculpture hands are in dhyana mudra and possibly wearing a lower garment indicating that the image is of shvetambaras.The extant remains to the right of the image may belong to the attedant associated with the tirthankara. The lions and makara are shown with opened mouth and elaborate mane of former is noteworthy.On stylistic grounds this damaged image may be ascribed to late-chalukyan period. |
