| Description / विवरण | This is a decorative member used as facing of super structure of a temple. This gavaksa pediment is decorated with a chaitya arch with elaborate foliage emanating from the mouth of kirtimukha at the apex and terminates on either side. In the central depression of arch a relief of dancing siva symbolizing cosmic dance is depicted.Here siva has four hands the upper right hand holds a damaru or hand drum and the lower right hand is in abhaya posture.The left upper hand carries a trident and the lower left hand probably carries fire or a serpent.Due to lack of space both legs bent at knee are shown resting on the back of apasmara-purusha who lies with his belly on the ground and his head turned to right and held high. The matted locks of hair of siva is braided up in a band. His face is obliterated. He wears sarpa kundala,vakshahara and nupura as ornaments and the lower garment is held by kati with pleats suspended between legs and rests on the back of apasmara.This appears to be one of the early examples of depiction of Nataraja under the early -chalukyas of Badami. |
