| Description / विवरण | In this stele a high relief ofa shiva dvarapala or door guardian standing in tribhanga is depicted.It is dmaged and two pieces are mended.The function of the door guardian is to protect temple or sanctum.This dvarapala has four arms. He carries damaru in the right upper hand whereas the lower hand probably in abhaya posture is obliterated from wrist onwards. The left lower hand rests on the hilt of mace with a single hood serpent coiling it and the upper left hand probably held a trident evident from the extant part of it.Head tilted to right is adorned with a jatamakuta decorated with jewels and a beaded band at the bottom of crown.Halo with beaded border is noteworthy.He is bejewelled with sarpakundalas,kanthihara,vakshahara,skandhamala,keyura,kankana,nupura and padasras.He wears a upavita as garland and the lower garment is held by a katibandha.This figure is apparently unfnished in some parts as no decoration is noticed on the garment. The round face with wide opened eyes,thick lips and pointed chin appearing stern are some of the characteristics of the late chalukyan art. |
