Description / विवरण | In this stele Shiva is depicted as kalantaka kalahari rescuing his young devotee Markandeya from the cluthes of Yama the god of death. In this high relief Shiva's profile is in tribhanga. Right leg of shiva is firmly planted on the ground whereas the bent left leg is stamping the trunk of kala who is resting on his knees and bewildered at this act. He is four armed. Right lower arm rests on right side of trunk whereas right upper arm and left lower arms holding the butt end of trident is shown resting on the right shoulder of kala.His left upper hand holds damaru. Shiva's braided hair is coiled up to form jatamakuta and decorated with crests and a beaded band at the bottom.Strands of curly hair rests on his shoulders.He is bedecked with ornaments such as karnakundalas,vakshahara,keyura, kankana and udarabandha.A slender upavita suspends from the left shoulder.The multi folded antariya is held by a katibandha.with a knot at the centre. Kala yama is depicted without a headgear and hair is spread on the back,his face expresses awe and pain simultaneously evident from frowning eye brows wide opened eyes and mouth. He wears ornaments such as karnakundalas,vakshahara,keyura, kankana and udarabandha. His antariya is held by a beaded katibandha.His left hand rests on the ground.Between the legs of shiva a small relief of seated Markandeya touching the shiva linga and anguish on the face of devotee is discernible.This relief represents the supremacy attianed by the early chalukyan sculptors in depicting the religious themes in a highly narrative manner within limited space.. |
