A sati stone is erected to honour the female who commits sati at the death of her husband. In this high relief the female is shown raising her right hand with opened palm and the left hand embraces the shoulder of male figure standing to her left. The neatly combed hair parted at the centre terminates with a semi circular protrusion at the rear end. She wears ornaments such as circular kundala, kanthihara, vakshahara, udarabandha, keyura and kankana. The long antariya with wavy design and the cental frill is held by a flat katibandha. The round face with opened eyes and flat nose are typical features of late mediaval art.The male figure is shown resting his right hand on the shoulder of the female. His brided hair is combed and held by a round band terminates at the left side with a tuft. He is round faced and the nose is obliterated. He is decorated with kanthihara, karnakundala, vakshahara, keyura, kankana and nupura.A thick upavita suspends from the left shoulder and passes across the right thigh. His lower garment is held by a katibandha which secures a small dagger at the right trunk. On stylistic grounds this sati stone may be ascribed to Vijayanagara period. |
