Description / विवरण | This is a sculptured panel normally used as a member of the basement of a temple. In this panel three frames narrate three episodes relating to childhood plays of Krishna as mentioned in Bhagavata.The relief in the first frame from left to right depicts the scene where krishna is in the act of killing the horse demon kesi at vrindavan.The horse demon is pouncing on krishna by lifting its front legs whereas krishna is is pushing his folded left arm into the mouth of the advancing horse to suffocate it.Krishna is shown standing firmly and raises his right hand.He wears antariya tied with katibandha.This fight is witnessed by people who are depicted holding swords in their right hand and wearing headgears, ornaments and lower garment.A figure in reclining posture is noteworthy.The second frame or scene depicts kaliya mardhana.Lillies,lotus and fish indicate the river yamuna.Right leg of Krishna is planted firmly whereas left leg is stamping the serpent coil.He is holding a cloth in his right hand and the object in the left hand is damaged.He wears a undergarment held by a katibandha,ornaments and a crown. kaliya along with his consort in half human form, head covered with three and one serpent hood respectively, emerge from the river folding their hands in anjali posture.This event is witnessed by people depicted wearing different attires and holding weapons. In the last scene krishna is shown holding the twisted neck of demon Arishta who attacked him in the form of a bull.Krishna attired in antariya with a knot on the right side and other ornaments, keeps his right foot firmly on the ground whereas left foot is bent at the knee indicting the force applied in subjugating the bull having a prominent hump at the back.A relief of tree indicates forest environs and the people witnessing this act are shown holding weapons such as sword and axe. All are with antariya and the braided hair is held by a band above the forehead.They wear ornaments such as karnakundalas, vakshhara and kankana.A figure in postrating posture is noteworthy.Stylistically this panel may be of early chalukyan period. |
