Description / विवरण | |
Description / विवरण | This sculpture of ten-armed Durga in form of Mahishasuramardini (slayer of the Buffalo demon) displays typical artistic features of the Pala period with simple Abhusana (ornaments), Jatamukuta and an unadorned semi-circular stele with pointed tip. The sculpture is carved out of a coarse-grained granite block and is heavily weathered making various iconographic details unidentifiable. The elongated earlobes of the goddess are adorned with Kundal (circular earrings) and her neck with Kanthabhusana (necklace). The deity is shown fighting with the kneeling demon Mahishasura with her trisula lodged in his body. The demon emerges here in anthropomorphic form, one foot still in the neck of the decapitated buffalo and other in the mouth of Durga s lion. Durga is standing in Pratyalidha posture with her left knee advanced on top of the dead buffalo and her right leg drawn back. With one of her left hands, she is grabbing the demon by his hair. The decapitated buffalo head is seen lying on the pedestal in the middle. Apart from a trisula, khetaka and an arrow on her right hands and a bow, parasu, and the sudarsana chakra on her left hands, other attributes of the deity are not prominent. It is a mid-relief with an intermediate projection. A protrusion can be visible at the bottom of the sculpture which might have been made with the intention of fitting it on top of a socketed platform. |
