Description / विवरण | |
Description / विवरण | This sculpture of Durga in form of Mahishasura-mardini (Slayer of the Buffalo demon) displays typical artistic features of the Pala period with Jatamukuta, simple Abhusana (ornaments), and a semi-circular, undecorated stele with a pointed tip. The sculpture is carved out of a coarse-grained granite block and is heavily weathered making various iconographic details unidentifiable. The elongated earlobes of the goddess are adorned with a pair of circular Kundal (earrings) and her chest with Kanthabhasana (Nacklace). The deity is shown fighting with the demon Mahishasura who lays dead on her lap with the trisula of the goddess still lodged in his body. The demon emerges here in anthropomorphic form, one foot still in the neck of the decapitated buffalo and other in the mouth of Durga s lion. Durga is standing in Pratyalidha posture with her left knee advanced and on top of the dead buffalo and her right leg drawn back. The decapitated buffalo head is seen lying on the pedestal in the middle. Although this depiction is of a ten-armed form of the deity, only nine hands could be seen. With one of her left hands, she is grabbing the demon by his hair. Apart from a trisula (trident), khetaka and an arrow on her right hands, other iconographic attributes are not prominent. It is a mid-relief with intermediate projection. A protrusion can be observed at the bottom of the sculpture which might have been made with the intention of fitting it on top of a socketed platform. |
