Description / विवरण | |
Description / विवरण | The sculpture is broken so that only the head and part of the right shoulder remain. The Buddha, nimbate, wears a diaphanous samghati with raised ridges depicting folds as are found on Buddha images of the Gupta period from Mathura. Folds of this type are not generally seen on images from this area. The face has plump cheeks, a bow-shaped mouth, and raised eye-brows. The folds of flesh on the neck are emphasized. A flying Deva bearing a garland can be seen above the figure. Part of the cross-bar of a throne back can be seen in low relief behind the right shoulder. Stylistically this head is reminiscentury of Sarnath images made after the fifth century A.D. |
