Description / विवरण | |
Description / विवरण | The circular abacus is decorated with an astragalus molding at the base, also to be observed in the Sankisa capital (Ref. Nihar Ranjan Ray, Maurya and Suaga Art, Calcutta 1965, Figure 5). Above this base is the popular knop-and-flower, a motif consisting of the honeysuckle or palmate alternating with a stylized lotus bud. The honeysuckle has seven petals radiating from a calyx with two bracts, and a rosette issuing from the sides. The bud is made up of superimposed leaves enclosing the partly revealed petals of a flower. The carving possesses the depth and clarity characteristic of Maurya ornamentation. The shaft of the column, carrying the inscriptions of Asoka and the famous eulogy of Samudragupta (c. A.D. 380.400), still stand, in Allahabad Fort. When the pillar fell to the ground is not known, but in A.D. 1605 it was set up at its present location by Jahangir who adorned it with a globe and cone capital. In 1838 it was again restored by Captain Edward Smith who was responsible for the reworked flat bands of the necking as well as the loti form member below, which was carved in two sections. The iron rod projecting from the abacus must have secured the new lion capital, likened by General Cunningham to a “poodle.†|
